Bruton mooted as next European commissioner

FORMER Taoiseach John Bruton refused to comment on suggestions that he should be Ireland’s next European commissioner when he steps down from his job in Washington later this year.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said he will propose to Taoiseach Brian Cowen that he appoint the former Meath TD to the job.

A new commission will be appointed in November, although countries will begin making nominations known from June as they lobby for prime positions.
