Review of gambling industry to delay betting tax rise

BETTING tax increases announced in the budget have been delayed for six months to allow the Government to undertake a review of the industry.

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said he hopes to target taxes at telephone and internet gambling sites which now account for a significant proportion of the gambling market.

He said the increase from 1% to 2% in the tax rate will be delayed until May 2009.
