Man fined €1,200 for selling fake goods

HAVING fake Nike and other sports goods for sale — in clear view of a Garda station — resulted in the culprit being fined €1,200 yesterday and an order was made for the destruction of the shirts and runners.

It was explained at Cork District Court that this issue had arisen before and that because the goods were illegal — in that they breached legislation on trademarks — the goods could not be put into circulation and they had to be destroyed.

Timothy McCarthy, 61, of 51 Cornmarket Street, pleaded guilty to three counts of breaching legislation of trademarked goods by stocking fake or spurious versions of the goods exactly one year to the day of his case yesterday.
