Now for the U-turn on pay deal...

OVER the past decade, the notion of the Government agreeing a national pay agreement and then attempting to rip it up would have been simply unthinkable.

Yesterday, however, Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Finance Minister Brian Lenihan both hinted at that exact possibility.

If anything indicates the scale of the cash crisis the Government is facing, this is surely it.
