Fears grow body may be of missing man

It is understood his family has been informed about the discovery, but gardaí are awaiting the arrival today of the State Pathologist Marie Cassidy before confirming an identity.

The body was discovered by gardaí in undergrowth at Ballyduff near Listowel at about 5pm.

Local gardaí have also requested the Garda Scenes of Crime team from Dublin to carry out a forensic sweep of the area.

Gardaí in Cork had earlier admitted being concerned about John McManus, but refused to comment on speculation that blood stains were found at his rented flat at Wellington Road in Cork city. Gardaí have also refused to comment on rumours that efforts were made to clean up the blood. It is believed that Mr McManus, who is originally from Fermoy, disappeared after a party was held in his flat last Thursday week.

He moved from Fermoy — the home of his father and respected businessman Pat, his mother Geraldine and sister Ciara and Mary — to Cork city about two months ago. According to his family he had been in good form.

His younger brother, Conor, was the last member of the family to have spoken to John, having had a phone conversation around lunchtime last Thursday week.

Gardaí went to Mr McManus’s flat last Wednesday afternoon. The flat remains sealed off as forensic experts continue with their technical examination. Anybody with information about Mr McManus’s movements over the past eight days is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station at 021-4558510.
