Underage sports alcohol policy

THE Vintners’ Federation of Ireland has drafted a policy for its members to stop the practice of promoting alcohol at underage sports level.

Underage sports alcohol policy

The policy has been drawn up in conjunction with a number of major sporting bodies who have been growing increasingly concerned by the drinking culture which has grown among young people. It looks at the way alcohol is not only promoted, but also used in sports celebrations. It states that: “Where underage clubs and teams are sponsored by publicans, only the name of the publican will appear on the jersey with no reference to premises.

“VFI members should desist from the practice of filling cups with alcohol for victorious underage teams.

“Where possible, underage teams will only be entertained in function rooms where there is no bar or where they are not exposed to alcohol consumption by team officials or the general public.”

Val Hanley, president of the federation, said: “The VFI is totally opposed to the misuse of alcohol and underage drinking and we support sport organisations’ initiatives to curb misuse of alcohol and underage drinking.”

The move comes after it was revealed the HSE and GAA have enlisted 900 officers in clubs to assist members who have a problem with alcohol and drugs through the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention programme.
