BUDGET cutbacks which “hurt badly” contributed to Fianna Fáil’s disastrous performance in the latest opinion poll, which showed the party’s support at an all-time low, a senior minister has said.

Social Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin admitted the poll results, which showed Fianna Fáil on just 26% and seven points behind Fine Gael, were “pretty awful” and “very disappointing”.

“But you know, when we look back at the week that we had, the difficult decisions that we had to make, everybody was with us in the country in saying we need to make tough decisions, we need to get the economy back,” she said.
