Council prepares to relocate motor tax office

CORK County Council is preparing to open up its new motor tax office on the site of a former Liebert factory.

Council prepares to relocate motor tax office

A total of 70 council staff are set to move from their current offices at Farranlea Road into the refurbished premises at Model Farm Road on Tuesday, October 28.

It is will be nearly 19 years to the day that they first moved into the Farranlea offices.

The former Liebert building was taken over six years ago by the local authority which relocated its planning department to the site while the 17-storey County Hall tower was being refurbished.

Following the refurbishment, planning department staff moved back to the main tower.

However, the council then moved its water services staff into the first floor at the Model Farm Road building.

The ground floor is to be taken over by the motor tax staff.

“One side of the ground floor will be designated for motor tax, while the other side will be for licences,” a county council spokesman said.

He said the new offices would be far more spacious than the Farranlea Road building and there would also be more parking spaces than at the former office.

The county council is hoping the new offices will be more easily accessible.

However, the spokesman said the easiest way to obtain motor tax was through its website site.

“We’re saying why stand in a queue when you can go online and get it. The whole thing can be processed within two working days.

“A lot of people still travel up from west Cork to do it at the office. Some people are travelling more than 100 miles to do the transaction. We’re saying they could save themselves time and money spent on fuel by doing it on-line,” the spokesman said.

Tax renewal can be done by logging onto www.motortax.ie
