Opposition calls for clarity on ‘toast of the bankers’ deal

THE “toast of the bankers” scheme needs more Dáil scrutiny and accountability to the public, the opposition argued yesterday.

The bill allowing for a rescue package for Irish financial institutions was debated until late last night in an effort to pass it into law at the earliest opportunity.

Around 30 amendments were proposed to the Credit Institutions (Financial Support) Bill which will legislate for a €400 billion state guarantee of Irish banks to prevent them going under.
