Westport sweeps to victory in Tidy Towns

WEEDS were plucked, grass cut, litter banished, rust vanished and a zero-tolerance policy imposed on dereliction of both duty and property.

The 50th annual Tidy Towns competition brought out the neat police like never before and 60,000 volunteers helped sweep 712 towns and villages into battle for the title of best groomed.

In the end it was Westport that best impressed, the Co Mayo town taking the national award for the third time in seven years with a score of 303 out of a possible 400.
