SF may consider tax rises to clear deficit

TAX increases might have to be examined to meet the state’s €3 billion shortfall in revenue, according to Sinn Féin. But the party would not say outright if it would support a hike in income tax to balance the books.

At its two-day parliamentary party meeting ahead of the Dáil resumption, Sinn Féin said it will set up an economic “think-tank” to offer the Government solutions on how to beat the recession.

The economic strategy group will be headed by Louth TD, Arthur Morgan, and will report with “real-world” solutions at the start of next year.
