€60k for four teachers given early retirement

THE Labour Court has recommended the Department of Education pay a total of €60,000 to four members of the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) who were given early retirement when a Dublin school closed in 2007.

According to the union, the Labour Court recommendation said there was a level of inadequacy in the department’s role in helping the claimants to find alternative positions when St Catherine’s College of Education for Home Economics closed in August 2007.

It upheld IFUT’s claim that the decision to remove the claimants from the payroll was unfair in the circumstances.
