Mayor fights ugly for town romance
The mayor in a town of love-starved hardened miners, where the goods are odd but the odds on romance are not so good, believes he has a solution.
It’s been said there’s no ugly women, just poor ones, and John Molony, mayor of Mount Isa in the Australian outback, is trying to raise the wages of love for women who have been short-changed in the beauty stakes.
Struggling to attract female company for the town’s single men, he has come up with an idea, invite ugly ones who will be grateful for the attention. However, several local women have said there are not many gems to be found among Mount Isa’s miners.
The ugly duckling proposal has led to Molony coming under fire since he told a local newspaper: “May I suggest if there are five blokes to every girl, we should find out where there are beauty-disadvantaged women and ask them to proceed to Mount Isa.”
The quotes, published in the Townsville Bulletin, sparked outrage among the town’s women. Mr Molony has declined to elaborate on his comments saying they had been “twisted and warped.” “I’ve been shredded,” he added, before hanging up the phone.
