Cyclist and two motorists die in weekend road crashes
The accident happened at about 12.45pm at Ballylinan.
The 32-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital.
The Swan to Wolfhill Road, just off the R430 Abbeyleix to Newtown Road, was closed for a time after the crash.
Meanwhile the 14-year-old cyclist who died after being struck by a car between Lahinch and Ennistymon at about 11.15pm on Friday has been named as Matthew Collins of 12 Kilcornan, Ennistymon.
The boy had attended the last night of the circus which was visiting Lahinch.
Two units of the fire brigade from Ennistymon and two ambulances from Ennis and Ennistymon rushed to the scene.
However the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy’s body was first removed to Ennis General Hospital but was later transferred to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for a postmortem examination.
Gardaí at Ennistymon are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with information to contact them on 065 7072180.
“This road is a fairly busy and there would have been a lot of traffic in the area on the night. The car was travelling towards Lahinch while the pedal cyclist was travelling in the opposite direction towards Ennistymon.
“We would ask anyone who travelled the road between Ennistymon and Lahinch between 11.00 and 11.15 on Friday night to contact us if they saw anything unusual or if they witnessed this tragic incident,” said a garda spokesman.
Meanwhile, the 30-year-old man who died in the road traffic collision which occurred at Kyletalisha, Portlaoise, Co Laois, on Friday has been named as Mathew Kelly of Cairn, Portarlington, Co Laois.
That collision, which occurred on the main Portlaoise to Mountmellick Road, involved a car and a truck. The truck driver was not injured in the collision.
Mr Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene.
