Householders hit as Eircom ups call charges 3.8%

HOUSEHOLDERS reeling from recent hikes in utility charges were hit with another blow yesterday when Eircom announced a 3.8% increase in landline call prices.

And the phone company did not give any guarantee that line rental charges — which were last pushed up a year ago — won’t be going up during 2009.

The call changes will take effect from Tuesday, September 2, and will see the current minimum charge of 6.65c per landline call, including VAT, being replaced by a fixed “call set-up” charge of 5.95c. Charges will then continue on a per-second basis for the length of the call.
