Educational breakthrough for Travellers
After completing a six week course in welding and fabrication skills, they received their certificates yesterday.
The course was drawn up with backing from the Higher Education Authority innovation fund.
Linda Barry of LIT said: “The access service at Limerick LIT joined forces with the HEA Traveller Initiative in the University of Limerick, to provide Travellers in Limerick with the educational tools needed to reach their potential.”
Following six-weeks of training, LIT hosted a graduation ceremony in honour of the 13 learners from the programme.
Dr Maria Hinfelaar, president of LIT, awarded the group with their skills level six certificates.
Linda Barry said: “For a Traveller to live in an inclusive society, the education system needs an agenda that educates and respects the identity of all students.
The Access Office at LIT is committed to providing support to programmes, like this, to ensure under-represented groups in third-level education are given every opportunity to excel and learn in a supportive and motivating environment.”
As part of the fabrication skills course, the men who live in the Castletroy and Childers Road halting sites, were given experience in metal work. They completed the construction of two garden benches which will be placed on their halting sites.
Ms Barry said: “The future aspiration of this initiative is to further develop the positive motivation this programme has instilled in these Traveller men.
Similar courses, which will further enable integration into third-level for the travelling community, will be explored including potential numeracy and literacy classes.”
