GARDAÍ suspect that a man found with serious head injuries on a Limerick street was assaulted.

The man, 41, who has not been named, was transferred to Cork University Hospital from the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where he was admitted at about 9pm on Wednesday night.

The alarm was raised when a passerby came upon the scene where the man was left with serious head injuries at Convent Street.

He may have been living rough, according to some local sources.

His condition was last night said to be critical but stable.

Gardaí have commenced an investigation into the circumstances in which he received his injuries.

Meanwhile, gardaí have discovered a firearm during a planned raid on a house in Cliodna Park, Moyross.

The gun has been sent to the garda ballistics section in Dublin for further forensic examination.
