Munster fans make the cut

A NEW craze is sweeping Limerick as fanatic Munster rugby followers engage in a mad scrum to have the faces of their heroes carved onto their heads in a novel hairstyle.

Munster fans make the cut

The Munster faces concept is the idea of Dave Gillespie, who runs the Identity hair salon on the Old Cratloe Road.

Dave along with colleagues, Dave McGorrian and Michelle Kelly, have drawn up designs featuring the faces of Munster squad members, as well as the Munster logo.

Michelle said: “The two Daves do the hair-styling, which produces fantastic facial images of the Munster team members, and I do the colouring. We have had a steady stream of customers coming in for the Munster hairstyles, and Paul O’Connell’s face is in great demand.”

Dave Gillespie said he had been working on the concept since Munster’s semi-final triumph set up a head-to-head with Toulouse.

He said: “We wanted to come up with something different to let the fans show off their allegiance to the Munster team. It took a bit of work to get it right, but the finish is just spectacular.”

To have a face clipped out in the Munster hairstyle takes about 45 minutes and costs €40.

Michelle said: “Since word has gone out about the Munster hairstyle the phone hasn’t stopped ringing.”

Meanwhile, the Munster rugby anthem, Stand Up and Fight, is ringing throughout the land thanks to Limerick tenor Derek Moloney.

Derek’s rendition of the song is now available on the Munster rugby website as a mobile phone ring tone.

Derek said: “It’s one of the songs on my new album which has been just launched and the Munster rugby people have taken Stand Up and Fight to sell it as a ring tone and hundreds have already taken it.”

Derek added: “I won’t be going to Cardiff as I had a prior commitment here in Limerick over the weekend.

“But I’ll watch the match with some friends in Nancy Blake’s pub and I’d say I will give Stand up And Fight a lash.

“It’s going to be a great day and Limerick will be the place to be for those who are not going to Cardiff.”
