Diabetes initiative wins HSE award

A SERVICE for people in Cork with diet-related diabetes that achieved a huge improvement in their health without increasing their medication has won the top award in the Health Service Executive’s inaugural national achievement awards.

The Community Nutrition and Dietetic Service, provided by the HSE South’s health promotion department, developed an education programme for people with type 2 diabetes in Charleville, Mallow and Skibbereen in Co Cork.

The X-PERT programme, which allows patients access to a dietician and education on healthy lifestyles, is being rolled out nationwide and is being considered for other chronic conditions.
