Close calls in quiz battles

THE first pair of quarter finals of the Thomas Crosbie Holdings All Ireland School Quiz took place last evening at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, when two tremendous contests ended with a mere two points separating winners from losers.

In the first session, St Nathy’s, Ballaghadereen, Co Roscommon, came from behind to outscore a very game Abbey CBS from Newry, Co Down, on a 102 to 100 scoreline.

In the second contest, there was a similar pattern with Avondale Community School Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, rallying to beat former winners St Mary’s College, Knockbeg, Carlow, on a 94 to 92 scoreline.

Results: Quiz No. 188 — St. Nathy’s 102 represented by Paul Healy, David Dunne, Kieran Duffy and Mark Higgins. Second were Abbey CBS 100 pts.

Quiz No. 189 — Avondale Community School 94 represented by Colm Lawlor, Conor Byrne, Padraigh Sheehan and Sarah Byrne. Runners up were St. Mary’s College with 92 pts.

Meanwhile, in Clonmel, quiz No 166, round three, was held in Hotel Minella Clonmel.

Winners St. Augustine’s College Dungarvan 102 (Joe Conway, Kevin Brazel, Michael Organ, James Coade). 2, Abbey CBS Tipperary town 86; 3, CBS Secondary School Dungarvan 82.
