Time called on shebeen for second occasion in month

A SHEBEEN operating in Southill has been closed down for the second time in less than a month.

Up to €1,000 worth of alcohol was confiscated.

Located in a council house in O’Malley Park, it originally opened last month in the lead in to Cheltenham. In that raid a substantial amount of alcohol was confiscated.

During the latest raids on Friday and Saturday night the shebeen was said to be doing a ‘roaring trade’ with more than 20 in the house. One customer was arrested for a breach of the peace while one raid was being carried out.

The illegal bar was fitted out with beer and stout taps and the spirits were dispensed from optic taps.

The owner of the house, who is well known in the Southill area had put the word out that he was open for business again, after being closed for a number of weeks as a result of the March raid.

“We inspected the premises under warrant on both Friday and Saturday night,” Insp Gerry McNamara said. “We seized quite a large quantity of alcohol on both nights including beer and spirits. We also seized kegs, taps and fridges. We will keep the alcohol as evidence and it may be the subject of a police property application in due course.”

C pay a cover charge and can drink as much as they want.

“It was very popular as there was great value with the price you were charged,” one local said. A lot of older people liked it. It was great to be able to go out for a drink in the estate.”
