Builders want parking deal
One contractor has suggested the provision of a parking disc at a yearly fee of €500.
People in the trades complain the work they carry out necessitates parking near business premises. At times, it means parking for periods longer than the permitted times in zoned areas.
Commercial contractor Ray Conroy said people with tax clearance and commercial vehicle certificates should be allowed to enter into some arrangement with the local authority.
He said special discs could be issued for a specified annual fee.
Mr Conroy said: “Such a disc could allow the holder to park legally for any amount of time.”
Self-employed for 20 years, the contractor said he has been hit with numerous parking tickets due to his work. He said: “I have always paid them and put them down as an occupational hazard. However, over the past few years, it has become a lot more awkward.
“When loading zones were introduced, it was a bit of a relief to park your commercial vehicle there and do some work and not worry about tickets in the one-hour zones.”
He said electrical contractors were allowed park for free once they put a sign on their vehicle setting out where they were working.
However, the arrangement no longer exists.
Mr Conroy said: “Limerick City Council would benefit from the annual fee and the paperwork involved in issuing fines and taking court action would be reduced.”
