THE state collected almost €100,000 in driving fines from motorists every single day last year, according to recent figures.

Between fixed-charge fines handed out by gardaí and fines handed down by the courts, motorists paid a total of €35.7m in 2007 for driving offences — a daily average of €97,808.

This is an increase on 2006, when €27.7m was collected, giving a daily average of €75,890.
