Bus driver testing moves on without union

BUS Éireann is pushing ahead with plans for random drug and drink testing of drivers despite the withdrawal of one of the main unions from talks on implementing the policy.

Bus driver testing moves on without union

The National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) walked out of negotiations more than a month ago after raising suspicions staff were already being secretly tested when samples taken during medical check-ups on return from sick leave were subjected to unauthorised drug and alcohol screening.

The dispute means talks with the union have stalled on plans to bring in testing in Dublin Bus, and on a review of testing procedures already brought in at Irish Rail last October. In all about 11,500 bus and rail workers, comprising drivers and depot staff, are meant to be subject to random testing, first proposed by the Government in 2003.
