AN INCREASING number of “boy racers” could face prosecution for having excessively noisy cars when gardaí purchase equipment to improve the collection of technical evidence in such cases.

In 2006, 714 motorists were prosecuted for driving excessively noisy cars, with 349 of those convicted.

Last year, 514 drivers were prosecuted, with 157 convictions recorded to date. A number of the remaining cases are still being processed through the courts.
