Cashel to host Lotto draw as €1m added to pot

PUNTERS blessed and cursed by Cheltenham Week are backing tonight’s National Lottery draw to produce more surprise winners, after Lotto bosses added a €1 million St Patrick’s Day bonus.

Tonight’s jackpot is an estimated €3m and all eyes will be on Cashel, Co Tipperary, when the balls start rolling at 8.05pm.

“We’re doing the draw in Cashel and it’s only the second time in the lottery’s history the draw has been outside Dublin,” said Lotto spokeswoman Paula McEvoy.

“Ticket sales are being helped along because of Cheltenham and all the jackpot talk about who won €14.5m on Wednesday.”

Yesterday afternoon Lotto chiefs said no one had come forward so far to claim the midweek draw’s bumper pay-out of €14,543,033. The winning numbers were: 24, 27, 28, 33, 35 and 36. The bonus ball was 15.

The winning ticket, a 4 Quick Pick ticket with Lotto Plus, was sold on Wednesday at Tesco in Newbridge, Co Kildare.

It was reported that former Newbridge mayor, caretaker Séamus Finn, had been named as the winner by his wife of 26 years, Marian.

But a smiling Mr Finn insisted: “I’m not the one. I don’t know where these rumours are coming from.”

Last night also saw a 25m jackpot up for grabs in the Euromillions draw, which capped a week of Irish betting fever at Cheltenham.

Tonight’s National Lottery draw is being televised from Cashel as part of the Lotto-sponsored Skyfest celebration for St Patrick’s Weekend.

“It’s the first time Skyfest has been held outside Dublin so we decided to have the draw live from Cashel as well,” said Ms McEvoy.

Tipp native Shane O’Donoghue will present the draw show from 7.35pm on RTÉ One.
