The Irish had a winner before racing even started with one of the fashion prizes, for best accessories, going to Amanda Kelly from Swords, in Dublin, on her first visit to Cheltenham.

Over with her husband, Stephen, Amanda was wearing, (we’re reliably told by those who know about these things) a black dress she from Jaeger she bought for her sister’s 40th birthday; shoes from Schu over the internet; a bag from Coast she customised with sewn-on pearls; a hat from the Powerscourt Centre; and Minnie Mouse checked shoes.

Also dressed to nines was Lily Lawlor from Killenaule, Co Tipperary, a horse owner herself over the years. “I come here every year,” she told us.

Disappointed on Wednesday morning, she found something to do with the unexpected free afternoon. “I went in shopping, spent a few hours there. It was grand,” she said.
