THREE firearms have been discovered during Garda raids on a halting site and houses in the Kilmallock area of Limerick.

Armed detectives and uniformed gardaí took part in the big search operation.

The three firearms have been sent to the Garda ballistic section for forensic examination.

The raids were carried out as part of the ongoing investigation into a series of robberies in east Limerick in recent weeks.

In one incident, the home of three elderly siblings, who live in an isolated area near Elton, was broken into and the occupants were said to be terrified .

Houses over a wide area have been broken into and many of the crimes were carried out during the day when the occupants were away at work.

Insp Gerry McNamara of Bruff Garda Station said: “There have been a number of robberies in recent weeks and these searches were carried out in connection with these.”
