GlaxoSmithKline to cut 100 jobs

UP TO 100 jobs are to be cut at GlaxoSmithKline in Cork and at least a further 100 jobs could be axed in Yahoo in Dublin, it emerged yesterday.

GlaxoSmithKline yesterday told its workforce in Currabinny that, due to falling volumes for the products manufactured at the site, it was introducing a redundancy programme through which it wants to lay off 100 permanent staff.

“We very much regret the impact these proposals may have on our staff and their families,” said the company’s local vice-president Finbar Whyte.

“In terms of any redundancies which may arise we will do everything we can to provide the necessary support to those impacted. “This proposal is not a reflection on the performance of the site or the commitment of our employees.” He said the staff cuts were necessary to protect the future of the Currabinny site.

He also insisted the job losses were not a reflection of the company’s commitment to Ireland.

“Over recent months, GlaxoSmithKline announced investment plans at Cork, building on the considerable investment in the site over the past five years,” said Mr Whyte.

“GlaxoSmithKline can confirm that these investments will go ahead as planned including the new TykerbTM facility, which will produce the active ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer.”

Meanwhile, in Dublin, sources close to Yahoo have indicated the company could be about to axe at least 100 jobs at its European base. In particular, an accounts section looks likely to be outsourced abroad.

When contacted the company said it was “unlikely” it would be commenting on the likelihood of job losses.

Meanwhile, on a more positive note, Employment Minister Micheál Martin yesterday announced that performance management company ServiceSource is to expand its Europe, Middle East and Asia headquarters in Dublin with the creation of 120 sales jobs.

The US company, which has Microsoft, Adobe and AT&T among its clients, has had its operations in Dublin since 2005.

It employs 180 people and intends to increase that to 300 by the end of 2008.
