GUESTS enjoying a romantic St Valentine’s stay at the luxury Adare Manor had to flee in the middle of the night after a fire alert.

A blaze in the kitchen of the five-star hotel set off alarms at around 1am yesterday. Nearly 70 guests had to leave the building as three units of the Co Limerick fire service brought the blaze under control. Only minor damage was caused.

In another fire alert, 14 operations were cancelled yesterday at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick when smoke got into an operating theatres.

It is understood that smoke from an overheating motor on the roof of the theatre block entered through a ventilation vent.

The theatre block was evacuated along with an adjoining surgical day ward.

Limerick Fire Brigade was called and the scene is now being inspected by the fire authorities. No damage or injuries were caused.

Meanwhile, fire fighters were still hosing down the burned out ruin of the Limerick Cold Store premises at Crossagalla industrial estate which was gutted on Wednesday.
