Limerick firefighters hose down warehouse remains after blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were yesterday still hosing down the massive cold store warehouse in Limerick destroyed by fire on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of tons of frozen food products were destroyed.

Garda technical experts are waiting until the ruined building is safe before they go in and try to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Part of the roof has already caved in.

The warehouse is located on an industrial park at Crossagalla on the Tipperary road. During the blaze, flames shot hundreds of metres into the night sky and could be seen 13km away

Limerick fire brigade got backup from Newport, Charleville, Cappamore, Shannon and Rathkeale to fight the blaze.

Nobody was hurt.

The warehouse is owned by Limerick Cold Store Ltd.

It is not yet known if jobs will be affected.

Such was the demand for water to contain the fire, Limerick City Council diverted the main supply system for the city.

A spokesman for the council said that during the first 12 hours more than 23 million litres were used by firefighters.

A spokesman for Limerick Fire Brigade said it will remain to hose down the burned-out shell for a number of days.

Six appliances were still at the scene last night.
