Security sector rights’ focus

INSPECTORS from the National Employment Rights Authority are set to focus on the security industry in their latest clampdown on abuse of workers’ rights.

Security sector rights’ focus

Director of the authority Ger Deering said there was sufficient evidence from last year to suggest that a targeted campaign would be worthwhile. Of 38 inspections of the sector last year, the employment rights breach detection rate was 53% and more than e33,000 in payment arrears due to employees was recovered.

Mr Deering said this year’s campaign was the “next logical step” in regard to the security sector.

“The security sector is a growth area and one which has relatively recently undergone regulation with the creation of the Private Security Authority. We undertook an initiative with the authority last year to inform employers and employees in the industry of employment rights and where they could go to find out more and this is the next logical step.”

Mr Deering said the authority was making people aware through a number of channels, including the media, that inspections would be taking place.

“We would recommend that this is a good opportunity for all employers and employees in the sector to familiarise themselves with their legal obligations and entitlements and ensure they are complied with,” said Mr Deering.
