O’Dea’s sister may run for seat

A SISTER of Defence Minister Willie O’Dea has put down a marker for the local elections next year.

O’Dea’s sister may run for seat

Mary Burke is expected to seek a Fianna Fáil nomination to run for a seat on Limerick County Council in the Kilmallock electoral area.

Ms Burke said yesterday her brother is strongly supportive of her name being put forward.

Ms Burke, who lives in Hospital, said: “I hope I have the courage to go for it. I have to wait for the Council Boundary Commission to review the area before I make a final decision, but I am getting very strong endorsement from local people and local politicians. I have also got a good endorsement from my brother.”

A special-needs facilitator in two pre-schools in Athlacca and Ballyneety, Ms Burke lost her only son, Brazil, 18 months ago when he was drowned while on holiday in Spain.

Mr O’Dea said his sister would make a fine politician.

He said: “I would like to see her run and I will support her if she does.”
