Abused children fall foul over staff shortages

CHILDREN showing signs of abuse and neglect are being denied prompt psychological assessments because of staff shortages in community care teams.

Yesterday, social workers went public to explain how staffing problems and the Health Service Executive recruitment ban is affecting vulnerable children.

The Irish Association of Social Workers said a lack of personnel means children in potentially damaging situations are having to endure unacceptable delays to be assessed and treated.
