PARENTS can begin planning for breaks during school holidays over the next three-and-a-half years following agreement on the school year up to 2011.

The standardised school year was introduced in 2004 to help families avoid problems caused where children were attending different schools with varied holiday arrangements.

At the time, agreement was reached between the Department of Education, teacher unions and school management bodies on the Christmas, Easter and the October/February mid-term breaks for each year up to next Easter.
