Man questioned in fatal stabbing case released

A 25-YEAR-OLD man questioned by Limerick gardaí in connection with the fatal stabbing of retired Army corporal, Stephen O’Grady, was released yesterday without charge.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is believed gardaí are not seeking anybody else in connection with the incident, which happened at about 2am on Thursday at Mr O’Grady’s home in Lenihan Avenue, Prospect.

Mr O’Grady, 45, who served in the Defence Forces from 1980 to 2001 and did eight tours of duty with the United Nations in Lebanon.

He was pronounced dead at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital. A knife believed to have been used in the stabbing has been recovered by gardaí.

The man questioned by gardaí went voluntarily to Roxboro Road Garda station about four hours after Mr O’Grady died.

Mr O’Grady is survived by his wife Regina and their six children.

His death brings to seven the number of violent deaths in Limerick this year and it was the second violent death within a week.

Seven days previously, Jeffrey Hannan, 19, was bludgeoned to death near his home in Southill.

Nobody has been arrested in connection with this attack.
