Research focuses on domestic violence

EVERY year more women in Europe die or are seriously injured because of domestic violence than from cancer.

In western economies last year rape and domestic violence was to blame for 19% of health problems suffered by women aged between 15 and 44.

These are among the findings of a research review which will be launched by the Women’s Health Council in Dublin today.

It looked at the impact of domestic violence on women in areas of health and economic wellbeing.

Today it will publish a list of recommendations and call for better systems within the health services to highlight cases of abuse so they can be dealt with appropriately.

The council’s director, Geraldine Luddy, said the combined international research showed the health sector was best placed to spot women at risk.

The council wants health professionals to be trained on how best to sensitively refer victims to support service.

It also wants women going through the health system to be screened for danger signs, especially in areas of mental health, antenatal care and in A&E.

The report will by launched by Irish Human Rights Commission chairman Maurice Manning, who said its findings should be taken on board.
