MOST people hear about road deaths, fatal fires and tragic accidents through news reports but emergency service workers have to deal first-hand with the raw experience each trauma brings.

Despite the personal distress that goes with the job, professions like the fire service traditionally have a very low staff turnover.

Somehow, faced with the worst possible scene, these people find a coping mechanism and carry on.
