The IMB’s enforcement section initiated 469 cases against individuals and organisations for breaches of medicinal product legislation during that year — and the figure has more than doubled to more than 1,000 so far this year, according to a spokeswoman.

The breaches in 2006 saw medicines such as antibiotics, anti-depressants, anabolic steroids and erectile dysfunction treatments imported, sold in shops or supplied over the internet which had not secured a manufacturer’s licence.
