A JUMP in the availability of cocaine and heroin, a ready supply of those willing to peddle drugs to vulnerable young people, waiting lists for treatment services and counselling are just some of the problems facing the city of Waterford, and many other towns and cities, as they battle against the consequences of drug taking.

Ballybeg ‘bound to happen’ given greater availability of drugs

There is little consolation for the Grey and Doyle families in Waterford this morning as they contemplate the tragedy that has befallen them since the weekend. But those involved in the never-ending battle against the consequences of drug taking hope that Sunday morning’s events may act as a wake-up call to other potential users.

Gardaí have made notable progress in their bid to prevent illegal drug use in recent years, while the services available to those with a problem are many and varied.
