Ahern calls for change in how law is regulated

THE legal profession should no longer be self-regulated, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said yesterday.

Speaking in the Dáil, Mr Ahern said self-regulation did not work and a new system was necessary for solicitors.

At present, the Law Society, the representative body for solicitors, is also responsible for regulating the profession.
