CUSTOMS officials encourage Irish shoppers with purchases in excess of €175 to declare these on arrival from the US.

But the Revenue Commissioners advise shoppers against trying to frustrate the taxman by cutting off the price tags and destroying receipts.

“If there are no price tags then we calculate the VAT and duty on the market rate of the goods,” said the Revenue’s Tony Buckley.
