Bertie gets personal in tribunal law debate

THE Taoiseach yesterday branded a Fine Gael TD a “loudmouth” after he accused him of a “sinister” motive in bringing forward tribunal legislation ahead of his return to Dublin Castle.

Defending an amendment to the Tribunal of Inquiry Bill to be introduced next week, which would allow tribunals to be shut down, the Taoiseach described as “stupid” yesterday’s statement by FG Senator Eugene Regan.

In the Seanad, Mr Regan said the proposed bill would enable the Government to close down a tribunal when it deemed fit. “I don’t know that man actually but he’s saying an awful lot about a lot of things and he is equally ill-informed on them all,” said Mr Ahern. “Actually, I think he’s becoming a bit of a loud mouth.”
