McCourt wants ashes in Shannon
But unlike his mother Angela’s ashes, which were placed in Mungret cemetery, McCourt wants his consigned to the River Shannon.
He said: “Let them scatter my ashes over the Shannon and pollute the river.”
McCourt said if a person lives past 65 they’re responsible to the rest of humanity to pass on their insights.
“That’s why you are allowed live a little longer. So if I’m here that’s the reason I’m here.”
He conceded every detail in Angela’s Ashes did not happen.
“Of course you embellish, and of course you have to fill in the blank spots of conversation. I keep quoting Gore Vidal who said a memoir is your impression of life,” he said.
