THE Irish prison service has been forced to defer millions of euro in payments to prison officers — because it has run out of money.

The officers are due pay increases of €3,750 each and the monies are supposed to be paid on November 22.

According to sources, the prison service has told officers they have overspent and need to secure supplementary funds to finance the payments to the members.
