PROPOSALS to have teacher competency assessed by school principals rather than inspectors have been firmly rejected by a union leader.

Tim O’Meara, president of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI), said it is natural and understandable that some teachers experience professional difficulties from time to time, just like workers in any other sector.

“However, TUI will accept nothing less than the involvement of independent professionals, in this case the Department of Education inspectorate, in assessing the competency of teachers,” he said.
