A MAN was arrested yesterday in connection with a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a woman aged 86.

The man, who is in his 50s, gave himself up at Midleton Garda station yesterday afternoon, hours after the woman was knocked down in the village of Castlemartyr, Co Cork.

The victim, named locally as retired nurse Mary Josephine McCarthy, was hit by a black car as she crossed the main road through the village of Castlemartyr, in east Cork, at about 7.10am.
