Domestic row may have led to woman’s death

GARDAÍ believe a young woman found dead in a south Dublin apartment yesterday was strangled.

A 32-year-old man believed to be her partner was arrested and is expected to be charged at a district court hearing early today in relation to her killing.

Shortly before 10am yesterday morning, gardaí were called to the Anna Livia apartment complex on James Street, Dublin 8. They arrested the man and brought him to Kilmainham Garda Station.

Neighbours said there had been signs of domestic disputes at the apartment.

The woman had been strangled, a senior Garda source said last night. State pathologist Marie Cassidy was due at the scene yesterday evening and a postmortem is expected to confirm the young female’s cause of death.

The woman was from Co Meath while her partner was well known in the area, as well as to gardaí. Neither had children.

Detectives were not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.

At a hearing in Kilmainham district court today, a serious charge is expected to be brought against the man in custody and a file sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old man lost his life yesterday when a fire swept through a caravan in which he was sleeping in Co Monaghan.

Gardaí are satisfied that the blaze started accidentally, although it was too early yesterday evening to determine the exact cause.

The fire happened in a caravan that was parked just outside a recognised halting site at Jubilee Road, on the edge of Clones.

Emergency services were called after the fire broke out at about 9am yesterday, but the body of the man was discovered inside the caravan. There was no other occupant at the time.

It’s understood that the man was single, had no children, and was originally from the Clones area.
