Phone service out to tender

THE State’s emergency 999 and 112 call service is not geared automatically to identify the location of calls made from mobile phones, it emerged this weekend.

The service is being operated by Eircom, but will now be put out to tender following a decision by the telecoms company that it no longer wanted to do it.

Communications Minister Eamon Ryan announced the tender process yesterday and stressed the importance of an effective emergency call system.
