OWNERS and operators of medium-sized fishing vessels can soon expect inspections and safety checks before they are allowed to take their boats out to sea.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey yesterday announced a series of new safety measures for fishing craft in the 15-24 metre category, which will come into effect on October 1 for new vessels, and on a staggered basis for older boats.

Meanwhile, the imminent lifting of two stricken trawlers, the Pere Charles and the Maggie B may also yield more clues about safety, said the minister.
